| Is Auckland being left behind in broadband? |
|
An article in today’s Computerworld provides various comment on Auckland’s broadband infrastructure. We note in particular, the view that Auckland is being left behind by other New Zealand cities. It suggests that network efforts in Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton are outstripping Auckland. However, to suggest Auckland is being left behind is not right. Much of the talk on fibre networks has been about getting services into homes. The networks referred to in the article are predominantly designed for and supplied to business – which of course should be the primary focus of enhanced broadband services. It makes no reference to the already-extensive and underutilised fibre optic networks available in Auckland cities – networks capable of delivering huge bandwidth and super-fast Internet services right now. All the networks in the world are worthless without useful application. Today’s business needs fast Internet simply to communicate and move information faster and more efficiently. Investment and innovation must therefore also be made in network services – the layers that sit on top of the broadband (fibre) network, enabling all the wonderful things high-bandwidth networks are able to do. New Zealand has a great store of intellectual property in this space, and there are many New Zealand companies exporting their knowledge to the rest of the world, successfully. Our purpose is to deliver that next layer of service – and right now we’re delivering high-bandwidth and high-availability Internet and Internet security services to businesses throughout New Zealand on the very networks we mention here. We’ve been putting together some very smart, cost-reducing wide-area network solutions using fibre optic networks, from Whangarei to Queenstown. If a business wants broadband improvements, it’s very likely available right now. Talk to us to find out |
