| Zero-Rated Internet Sites Not Enough |
|
There has been recent talk of certain Internet service providers (ISPs) raising excess data charges on Internet plans, then following up with “zero rated” local Internet sites, where downloading from such sites won’t count as usage towards your data cap. But if the zero-rated site list was to change at any time, you may be caught off guard and receive a nasty surprise in the form of an increased bill, rather than an improved service. Trying to explain that is confusing enough. All of this plan-fidgeting is sure to only make confusing services even more confusing. Data bandwidth (particularly international) is a limited resource in New Zealand, an expensive resource managed carefully by ISPs. Because of this, the easiest thing to do is limit (or cap) how much a customer can use in a month, then charge dearly for anything above that cap, or simply cut you off. Charging for excess data has been a major revenue generator for ISPs for many years and doesn’t require much thought, innovation or creativity. In our article yesterday, we mention the under-utilised fibre optic networks in Auckland and other New Zealand cities and stress the importance of the need for investment in broadband services – the services that sit on top of the fibre optic networks. Without service improvements, new networks will struggle to provide any more value. NATCOM has been investing in the creation of improved Internet services over fibre optic networks. Services that are simple to understand, provide greater value, greater performance, and could save a business up to 80% or more on the cost of their Internet. We do this by including all the essential services a business would need for fast and secure Internet in one simple package – OneSERVICE™. OneSERVICE™ includes UNLIMITED data for both national and international bandwidth – meaning it’s “zero rated” for the entire Internet! We even include our SLAM™ firewall appliance and security service will all OneSERVICE™ business Internet plans. This alone can save a business $10,000 per year in service costs, not to mention the superior security performance that comes with it! Zero-rating is not enough. Businesses must be able to use as much Internet as they need to perform their normal business. Without it can be economically constraining. Talk to us to find out more. |
